There are several different methods firewalls use to filter out information, and some are used in combination. These methods work at different layers of a network firewall, which determines how specific the filtering options can be.

Otherwise, it is discarded. Stateful inspection can also collect information about the data packets that go through it and use that to gain more insights into data that may pose potential threats in the future.
