If you submit an Arts Portfolio, you are not required to major in the arts. Do all application materials need to be submitted by the early deadline? Can I include a letter of recommendation from an arts instructor with my portfolio?
Your recommender will receive an email with instructions for uploading their letter. Classical and jazz submissions should be considered separate instrument or voice areas. You can perform with recorded accompaniment played from a device with a speaker in the room with you. We are sympathetic to the fact that the sound is less that ideal, but this is a compromise we welcome to help keep you safe.
If you are considering performing with live accompaniment, we ask that you refer to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention and your county of residence for the current safest guidelines for social distancing.
No student will be at a disadvantage for performing with recorded accompaniment, nor will any student gain an advantage by performing with live accompaniment.
No one at Stanford wants to see a student exposed to risk for the sake of an Arts Portfolio. Unfortunately, we cannot allow overlays or other edits that manipulate the content of the performance. The speaker of your output device will be completely acceptable. You may choose to submit your pieces as separate files if you wish, and this may be more convenient. Submitting your concert clips will add color to your application and can show prowess in an unusual speciality, which is always an asset in your college applications. I feel very passionate about photography and have devoted a lot of time to it outside of school. I have not won any major awards individually just a few local but have submitted work to my HS arts magazine that won a Columbia silver crown award.
