Where is deception island

Named after beard-like strap of black feathers under their chins, these very cute birds are around 27 inches tall when fully grown. Another great hiking spot is Telefon Bay, located northwest of Port Foster. One major hiking advantage of Deception Island over other parts of Antarctica is that it's not completely covered with ice. These include a derelict airplane hangar and a partially destroyed British scientific station known as Biscoe House.

While life on the island can seem bleak and inhospitable, a diverse array of species still exists there. Eight seabirds also nest there, including the chinstrap penguin colony at Baily Head. The colony is comprised of over , breeding pairs of penguins—the largest group in the Antarctic Peninsula and possibly one of the largest in the world.

Several countries established research bases on the island in the 20th century, though scientific experiments were being conducted by the British as early as Chile, Norway, and Britain all had bases on the island, but volcanic eruptions and activity in the late s destroyed the Chilean base at Pendulum Cove and led to the permanent closure of the British base.

It just looks like it can't possibly be real. National Geographic has been photographing Deception Island for decades. In Whalers Bay and Pendulum Cove the shallow water, only during low tide, can be pleasant for skinny dipping. But take care; most of the time one side of your body feels like it is being cooked while the other side is almost freezing from the cold seawater. Unlike many other parts of Antarctica, Deception Island is not totally covered by ice and therefore it offers some great walking opportunities.

From this metres high summit great views of Port Foster and the little rock columns called the Sewing Machine Needles can be made. Also Telefon Bay, at the north-western side of Port Foster offers great hiking opportunities. The eruption of created a lunar landscape with a beautiful crater. A riveting cosmic event only fully experienced along a narrow terrestrial pathway.
