How long is the diameter of the moon

The Earth and the other planets formed out of this cloud of material. The young Solar System was an incredibly turbulent place with a lot of collisions between large, rocky bodies.

The giant-impact theory of the moon's formation suggests that a rocky body, about the size of Mars, smashed into the young Earth, which threw debris out into space. Gravity pulled the debris from the impact together as it orbited the Earth, which collected to form the Moon. NASA's Apollo missions brought back over a third of a tonne of rock and soil from the Moon, allowing scientists to better understand how it formed.

If the Moon had previously been an asteroid and formed somewhere else in the Solar System, the Moon and the Earth would have different compositions.

However , astronomers found that the composition of the Moon and the Earth are similar, pointing to a linked history. Learn more about the Apollo missions. It is common idea, particularly amongst children, that the stars and the Moon are seen at night and the Sun is seen during the day. During the day, the light from the Sun, scattered by the atmosphere of the Earth, drowns out the much fainter stars. This makes them all but impossible to see without specialist equipment.

However, the Moon, being far closer and brighter than the distant stars, can often be seen during the day. The most likely time to notice it during the day is somewhere between a wide crescent and a thin gibbous i. At this point the Moon is illuminated enough to be visible not at new Moon , is far enough from the Sun in the sky to avoid looking to close to the Sun as would happen at new Moon or a thin crescent , but is not on the complete opposite side of the sky from the Sun and thus only rises when the Sun is setting as would happen around full Moon.

However, nothing beats having direct samples. Only a handful of celestial objects have been visited by automated probes. The gravitational pull of the Moon causes the water on the nearest side of Earth to bulge outwards, resulting in a high tide.

Curiously, it also causes the water on the other side of the Earth to bulge outwards. This is because the Moon's gravity is not the only force acting on the planet's water, as Earth's own gravity also has to be taken into account. The resulting tidal force is stretching and squashing Earth, resulting in the water bulging on the two opposite sides of the planet.

Twelve people in total have walked on the surface of the Moon. During these missions, the astronauts collected samples , conducted science experiments, explored the landscape in a buggy and even played golf.

How big is the Moon? How cold is the Moon?

Is there water on the Moon? How far from Earth is the Moon? Is the Moon getting closer? Category: Space Published: December 15, The moon stays approximately the same size, whether measured by apparent size or actual size. Actual size is the number you would measure if you went to the moon with a long ruler. This may be useful if you only want to search for an approximative value. It works by considering the diameters of the Earth's shadow and of the Earth are equal, as if the Earth's shadow was cylindrical.

The correct value is km so this result is far from the real one, but it gives a rough estimate. In the next example, you may take the correct diameter of the Earth's shadow km from the following computation and then get the Moon's diameter from that result.

To be more concise, we now consider the Earth's shadow as a cone, and we compute its diameter at the Moon's distance. There are no big mathematical difficulties, but some of you may have find it more difficult to understand this method. As it can be measured, the apparent diameter of the Sun is almost the same as the apparent diameter of the Moon about half a degree.
